1  Introduction

Advanced Quantitative Research Methods is designed to introduce you to a range of analytical techniques and models that can be applied to sports data. In the following chapters we will explore ways to go beyond ‘standard’ statistical techniques that you will have encountered in your undergraduate programme, and to broaden our horizons on how quantitative methods can help us better understand and predict the world of sport.

The approach taken is to introduce these techniques rather than cover them in depth. Hopefully, having gained a sense of the landscape, you will then be able to explore selected techniques further, and apply them to your own data.
